Brita Fordice is an incredibly creative and talented fly designer for Rio. Her flies are functionally crafted, amazingly fishy and typically sport funny and memorable names. The Sir Sticks A Lot is one of my favorite of her patterns both for its clever homage to an iconic 90's Pacific Northwest rapper and its consistent ability to pin all sorts of big trout, char and bass.
You simply can't beat a rabbit strip for maximum movement and durability in a streamer pattern. The drawback to using a lot of bunny on big streamers is that they quickly become a burden to cast. The Dali Lama has long been one of my favorite rabbit streamers for both Northwest bull trout and big coho salmon in Alaska. While it absolutely slays when stripped deep through a pool, it has to be one of the worst casting flies I've ever tossed. It soaks up a ton of water and is about as aerodynamic as a wet gym sock. The Sir Sticks A Lot on the other hand, maintains a comparable mobility in the water to the Dali Lama, but with just a single zonker strip, streamlined slotted tungsten bead and entirely synthetic body, soaks up considerably less moisture and is pretty easily cast on a variety of rods from a 4 weight trout spey to a 6 weight single hander.
I also like the fact that the short shanked jig hook on the Sir Sticks A Lot is at the front of the fly. While many streamers feature longer shanked hooks or trailing hooks, I find that large predatory fish tend to eat baitfish patterns head first so I still get solid connections with this one but also reduce the risk of a deep hook up. Here in the North Puget Sound, the Sir Sticks A Lot has become one of my favorite bull trout patterns on the Skagit and Sauk Rivers. The white version I tie here is definitely the top dog, but at times, olive and white, black and white or brown and gold or copper are really effective and all take up space in my box. I've recently taken to tying some bright fluorescent colors for pinks, coho and chum. This fly's ability to drop quickly and jig enticingly make it pretty irresistible to salmon too.
The Sir Sticks A Lot definitely deserves a permanent space in your streamer collection and, in the event you don't tie your own, is readily available commercially from Rio Flies.
