The azure-blue waters of Baja's Sea of Cortez are home to a wide variety of pelagic species. Perhaps the most coveted among them are the roosterfish, known locally as "los gallos". Roosters offer everything you could ask for in a fly rod fish. They hunt near the surface, frequently travel in packs and attack the fly with a ferocity that is both visual and visceral. They are strong and powerful and some of them get really big. You'll want 10's and 12 weights for this trip. Beyond the roosters, we often encounter catch dorado (mahi mahi, big jacks, skipjack tuna, yellowtail, pargo and golden trevally depending on the time of year.

Long time guide and friend of the Confluence, Colin Flanagan and his partner Bret Spears have built an amazing lodge on a remote coastline of the Sea of Cortez a few hours from La Paz. You'll stay in comfortable air conditioned rooms in a quaint new construction complete with a roof top deck where you can gaze wistfully at the tranquil bay just a few steps away, where pelicans and smaller roosterfish hunt sardinas near the shore.

The trip includes 5 full days of fishing from large pangas, which allow 2-3 people to fly cast simultaneously. Double and even triple hook ups are not uncommon. During the fall, roosterfish remain plentiful and are the primary target, with dorado (mahi mahi) appearing almost daily as well. It's not uncommon to encounter a variety of other species while fly fishing in these rich waters from skipjack tuna and jack crevalle to golden trevally. Options to fish from the beach and hunt larger roosterfish exist as well if you're up for the challenge.
